He created a famous term called ¿Manifest Destiny¿ suggesting that it was Americä s destiny to expand its western borders to the Pacific ocean by conquering the entire North American continent in order to bring to it American democracy and the advantages of the market. ¿Our manifest destiny [is] to overspread the continent allotted by Providence for the free development of our yearly multiplying millions. This we have seen done by England, our old rival and enemy; and by France¿. In the American public the idea of migration beyond the Mississippi territory was met with an enthusiastic interest, than Americäs population grew dramatically and additional land for settlement was required. The westward expansion, however, destroyed the political balance regarding the issue of slavery that held the nation for decades together and even dramatically intensified the conflict between the Southerners and the Northerners. By 1860 the North and the South grew to such an extent apart resulting in the inevitable secession of eleven of the fifteen slave states from the Union and creation of a new nation called the Confederate States of America. The westward expansion subsequently led to the bloodiest conflict in the young American history, the American Civil War. The aim of this paper is to examine the westward expansion and to explain how it exacerbated sectional differences in the first half of the 19th century.…

English is omnipresent; in TV, in radio, in print media, at every corner of larger urban areas. Indian English is considered as one of the most important English varieties throughout the world.'It nevertheless constitutes a minority lect' (Schneider 2007:161), since only approximately 11 percent of the Indian population have a command of English (2001 Census of India). Indian English comes in a range of varieties with distinct phonological features, highly influenced by local languages. But India has also produced its own standard variety, which is comparable to standard (British) English, yet has some features characterizing it as Indian (Kachru 1983:73). This essay presents the context and current position of Indian English and discusses this English variety within McArthur's, Kachru's and Schneider's models of English. Zwei hellenistische Reiche im Vergleich., Sprache: Deutsch, Abstract: Innerhalb einer Zeitspanne von etwas mehr als einhundert Jahren im zweiten und dritten vor-christlichen Jahrhundert haben das ptolemäische Ägypten und das Seleukidenreich eine Reihe von Kriegen ausgefochten, die in der modernen Forschungsliteratur als Syrische Kriege bezeichnet werden. Der sechste und letzte Syrische Krieg, der in den Jahren 170/169 v. Chr. bis 168 v. Chr. stattfand, wurde zwischen einem wechselnden ptolemäischen Regiment und dem Seleukidenkönig Antiochos IV. ausgetragen. Die kriegerische Auseinandersetzung wurde von den Ptolemäern mit dem Ziel provoziert, das ehemals ägyptische strategisch bedeutsame Koilesyrien, das im 5. Syrischen Krieg (202 v. Chr. - 195 v. Chr.) an die Seleukiden abgetreten werden musste, zurückzuerobern. Ähnlich wie beim 5. Syrischen Krieg, wurde der 6. Syrische Krieg von dem 3. Makedonischen Krieg, einer erneuten militärischen Auseinandersetzung zwischen Rom und Makedonien unter König Perseus, begleitet. Obwohl der römische Staat einen eigenen Krieg ausgefochten hat, war dieser im letzten Syrischen Krieg konstant involviert. Durch Gesandtschaften versuchten die beiden hellenistischen Kriegsparteien die Gunst Roms und dessen Unterstützung für sich zu gewinnen. Geleitet von einer machiavellistisch eingestellten Außenpolitik hat der römische Senat keine eindeutige Partei in dem ägyptisch-syrischen Konflikt ergriffen. Jede Konfrontation zwischen hellenistischen Großreichen, in denen diese ihre Kräfte aufrieben und sich gegenseitig schwächten, war Rom höchst gelegen, besonders zum Zeitpunkt der makedonischen Bedrohung. Der durch zahlreiche antike Autoren berühmt gewordene 'Tag von Eleusis' markierte das Ende des 6. Syrischen Krieges; überhaupt erst möglich geworden durch den römischen Sieg über Perseus bei Pydna. Durch den Sieg über Makedonien hat sich Rom endgültig als die dominierende Macht im östlichen Mittelmeerraum durchgesetzt, während die beiden hellenistischen Mächte Ägypten und das Seleukidenreich durch Eleusis in eine noch stärkere Abhängigkeit und Fügsamkeit gegenüber Rom gerieten.
