Pages clean and unmarked. Fourth in the annual series the University began in 1948, which took on sculpture in 1953 and ran on as the Contemporary American Painting and Sculpture exhibitions. The University bought from each show, and those purchases built the collection that became the Krannert Art Museum. One hundred and thirty-six canvases, chosen by C. V. Donovan, J. D. Hogan and A. S. Weller. Jackson Pollock's No. 4 is reproduced at Plate 26. Of particular note are the Biographical Notes, where Edwin C. Rae gathered statements from the painters themselves. Most were speaking long before the reputations that now precede them. Gertrude Abercrombie talks about Aledo, bebop, and the jam sessions Charlie Parker, Dizzy Gillespie and Sarah Vaughan held at her Chicago house; her first institutional retrospective since 1991 opened at the Carnegie Museum of Art in January 2025. Hedda Sterne had taken a University of Illinois award the year before, months before Nina Leen photographed her for Life as the only woman among the Irascibles. Eldzier Cortor, Perle Fine, Hans Burkhardt and Joyce Treiman, whose Wanderers is the frontispiece, are all in the exhibition, with Beckmann, Chagall, Hofmann, Feininger, Gottlieb, Tanguy and Guston.…
