Three quarter brown leather with blue cloth, titled in gilt with gilt-ruled decorations and raised bands on the spine. The covers are rubbed and scuffed with wear to the corners. There is heavy dampstaining and wear to the bottom of the front cover. Twelve issue…s of these periodicals bound in one volume, comprising pages [1] - 144; [225] - 440; [1] - 440, illustrated with profuse textual illustrations, pictorial title pages & 3 steel-engraved plates. The front hinge is cracked. There is a tiny tear with wear to the front edge of the first leaf with dampstaining and foxing to the edges of that leaf. There is occasional scattered foxing and light soiling throughout. Good. The contents are as follows: PACKARD'S MONTHLY, January-March 1870, edited by Silas Sadler Packard: "The Destitute and Outcast Children of N.Y. City", in two parts, illustrated with 2 steel engraved plates, by Oliver Dyer (1824-1907). He also contributed "The Bucket Shops of New York", illustrated with a steel engraved plate. Dyer pioneered in developing a shorthand system and was most prominent as a campaigner against what he perceived as New York's underworld. "Facts About Working Women" by Eleanor Kirk (1831-1908). Kirk was a leading fighter for women's rights. She was also a newspaper woman and publisher, and she had a special interest in astrology. "Was Morgan Murdered?" by James Franklin Fitts; "News-Children of New York" by Nathan D. Urner; "New Orleans" by J.C. Hurston and "Adah Isaacs Menken" by her spouse Robert Henry Newell (1836-1901), the humorist who was briefly married to the actress.THE PHRENOLOGICAL JOURNAL AND LIFE ILLUSTRATED, April-May 1870, edited by Samuel R. Wells. [The "Phrenological Journal" and "Packard's Monthly" have now been consolidated in one publication. This is described by Silas S. Packard on page 276 and in correspondence between Packard and Wells published on page 288.] From this issue forward wood-cut portraits of various notable personalities appear together with descriptions of their personalities which include phrenological references. Among the personalities included are: Henry Bergh, the founder of the American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals, Mark (Brick) Pomeroy, a journalist known for his anti-Lincoln position, Prince Pierre Napoleon Bonaparte, the assassin, and his victim Victor Noir (Salmon), Seth Green, a fish culturist, Sir Samuel W. Baker, the explorer, the author Charles Dickens, Joseph E. Johnston, the Confederate General, George Trask, a tobacco reformer, General Robert E. Lee, and "Types of the Beyrout Population". Articles included in these issues include: "Sketches of Life in China" by Justus Doolittle with 6 illustrations, "Ladies' Restaurants" by Celia Logan Kellogg, "Young-Womanhood in America" by Howard Glyndon, "Eleanor Kirk at the Five Points", "To Dahomey and Back" by J.W.
