He was a 19th century Russian adventurer, traveller and anthropologist. As a scientist and scholar he is revered throughout the Russian Federation. The Pacific region including New Guinea was his main field of study. Nikolai lived for several years in Australia where he married an Australian lady, and was responsible for setting up the first biological research station in Australia at Watsons Bay in Sydney in 1881. A history, by the local Woollahra Municipal Library, of a man who achieved a lot in his short life of 41 years. (Plus: Loosely inserted pamphlet about him.).
