Hardback. Condizione: Fine. Second Edition. THE DUKE OF REICHSTADT (NAPOLEON 11) A Biuography Compiled From New Sources of Information Edward De Wertheimer. John Lane The Bodley Head, London. 1906 Second Edition 464pp plus 22pp Publisher's Adverts. Illustrated Hardback. This copy is bound in original red linen covered boards gil…t titling and banding to the spine which is lightly sunned and a gilt coat of arms to the front board. The pages are uncur to the outer edge and the stock in fine, bright and tight throughout. Napoléon II (20 March 1811 - 22 July 1832), after 1818 known as Franz, Duke of Reichstadt, was the son of Napoleon I, Emperor of the French, and his second wife, Marie Louise of Austria. By Title III, article 9 of the French Constitution of the time, he was Prince Imperial, but he was also known from birth as the King of Rome which Napoleon I declared was the courtesy title of the heir-apparent. He was widely known in France as "the Eaglet". When his father abdicated in April 1814, he named his son Emperor, but the coalition partners that had defeated Napoleon refused to acknowledge his son as successor. Although he never actually ruled France, he was the titular Emperor and he is still generally referred to by historians as Napoleon II. Ref B4.

Hardcover. Condizione: Near Fine. 2nd Edition. 2nd edition, 8vo., 463 pages. Frontis & 19 illustrations. An account of The Duke of Reichstadt (Napoleon II): A Biography Compiled From new Sources of Information A biography of the "Eaglet", Napoléon II (20 March 1811 - 22 July 1832), after 1818 known as Franz, Duke of Reichstadt,…the son of Napoleon I, Emperor of the French, and his second wife, Marie Louise of Austria. When Napoleon abdicated in April 1814, he named his son Emperor, but the coalition partners who defeated Napoleon refused to acknowledge a successor. Although he never actually ruled France, he is still generally referred to by historians as Napoleon II. An attractive unsigned half leather binding almost certainly by P.B. Sanford, who was active in Boston in the early 20th century. The tooling is identical to other bindings signed by him. His bindings are uncommon. Spine tooled with characteristic Napoleonic devices: The Napoleonic or Imperial bee together with an imperial crown surmounting a stylized Napoleonic "N". Year of publication (1906) tooled at heel. Top edge gilt. Two ownership bookplates (Wiggin, 1630 & E.R. Albert, Jr. Tulsa, Oklahoma). Some rubbing to the edges and surficial loss to one corner. Otherwise, fine. Extra charges will be necessary if you are shipping outside the USA.
