Aggiungi al carrelloSoftcover. Condizione: Very good+ condition. First edition. Inscribed "For Amalia, Emerson 1974" on title page. Oblong Quarto. Unpaginated (24pp). Original illustrated yellow wraps, protected by modern mylar. Catalog for the exhibition at the Newport Harbor Art Museum from April 27 through June 2, 1974. Looking back to the Forti…es and Fifties, decades of the emergence of American Abstract Expressionism, the first internationally recognized American art movement, art has come a long way from 'Art for art's sake' of the 19th century to ".all art now invites 'audience participation' of modern mass society." (Harold Rosenberg). New York being the center of this movement, fine artists like Sam Francis, Emerson Woelffer, Richard Diebenkorn and John Altoon emerged in California. Invited by Buckminster Fuller to consider a summer course at Black Mountain College, Josef Albers headed the painting department at that time, Woelffer and his wife Diana went on to Mexico, landing in Campeche, Yucatan. Though the effects of this trip were not immediately visible, they were of a lasting duration. "For the primitive in his nature always formed a very essential part of his creative ability and his deep understanding and love for the primitive cultures of other countries and ages." (Wescher). Profusely illustrated with b/w reproductions of Woelffer's art exhibited in Newport, including catalog of the exhibition. Minor foxing on title, last page and foredge.
