Hij was jarenlang het gezicht van VPRO Boeken, een van de geestelijk vaders van het legendarische radioprogramma De Avonden, maar bovenal dichter. In zijn jeugd maakte hij wandelingen langs de IJssel, het decor van zijn jeugd, keek er naar vogels en schreef af en toe wat op in een boekje. 'Het lijkt wel poėzie,' zei een schoolvriend. Niet veel later, op 19-jarige leeftijd, debuteerde hij in Hollands Maandblad. Wim is langs de weg van de poėzie ontsnapt aan zijn dorp en zijn familie. Hij ging journalistiek studeren, publiceerde zijn eerste bundel, kwam terecht bij de VPRO-radio. Door zijn dood is zijn poėzie van kleur verschoten. Ineens lijken alle borden naar het levenseinde te wijzen. Verraderlijk. Het is misschien beter om vooral te kijken naar het landschap waar die borden in staan. Wim was goed in het opmerken van wat anderen niet zien. De beste definitie van goed kijken vond hij: negeren wat je geacht wordt te zien. Die definitie bevat tevens een karakterisering van zijn werk. Naar zichzelf keek hij liever niet. Hij registreerde liever wat hij zag. Daarin zat al genoeg Wim. In wezen bleef hij altijd die vogelaar. In dit eerbetoon kijken we naar Wim Brands door de ogen van degenen die hem goed hebben gekend, om naast zijn werk ook iets vast te houden van wie hij was voor zijn vrienden.
