Original unpublished typed manuscript with extensive music (notes attractively drawn in black ink on red staff lines). This study grew out of the affection Otto C. Doering, an Executive at Sears, Roebuck in Chicago, had for Christmas carols. Archibald T. Davison was initially approached for the project and declined. It quickly wound its way to young Mr. Westrup, just graduated from Oxford, who went on to have a distinguished career as a musicologist and Professor of Music for which he was knighted in 1961. The signed Preface makes it clear that Westrup's study, underwritten by Doering, was focused on Christmas carols composed before the middle of the 18th century and was centered around Avignon while ignoring Eastern Provence entirely. Two photostatic copies of this unpublished manuscript were made for Mr. Doering and given to Harvard University and the University of Chicago. Doering retained the original manuscript; his bookplate is mounted on the front pastedown in each volume. A file of correspondence accompanies these volumes and consists of: (1) some fragile and moldering correspondence from the 1920s as the project got refined and progressed; and (2) a much larger batch in better shape from the late 1940s and early 1950s, mostly about Harvard's interest this manuscript and in its possible publication, which includes an unsigned typewritten five-page article Davison wrote for their alumni bulletin about his involvement with this project and the manuscript.…
