L'unione delle sue tre personalità lo portò a progettare e ad autocostruire i primi catamarani da viaggio, che nella loro essenzialità rispecchiavano la sua filosofia di vita, fatta di grandi spazi, di contatto autentico con la natura, di rapporti umani liberi dagli schemi e dalle regole della società di allora. Tutto ebbe inizio nei primi anni '50, quando James vide il film sull'epico viaggio del Kon-Tiki. Decise allora di dimostrare che le imbarcazioni a doppia canoa polinesiane erano in grado di affrontare le onde del Pacifico e che i popoli provenienti dal Sud-Est asiatico avevano raggiunto e colonizzato l'intero arcipelago. L'unico modo per farlo era costruirne una lui stesso, e con essa intraprendere quella navigazione. Un catamarano dopo l'altro, James si avvicinò sempre più alla realizzazione del suo sogno giovanile di raggiungere la Polinesia e studiare il suo popolo, che avvenne solo in età matura, negli anni '90, a bordo di Spirit of Gaia, il suo ultimo catamarano di 63 piedi. A buona ragione, Wharram può essere considerato il capostipite di un Popolo del Mare sparso su tutti gli oceani, di cui fanno parte spiriti liberi affascinati dal suo motto: "Sogna, costruisci, naviga".
