As cleverness, the system attempts to execute the Grand Synthesis of theology and philosophy which holds Tillich in thrall; as deception its function is to camouflage the hidden message and thereby protect Tillich's standing in the Church. I have my doubts about what Tillich has accomplished by way of uniting theology and philosophy--and about the value of such an enterprise. The deception, it must be conceded, has been remarkably effective. But to get to the point, the system has been utterly unable to serve the quest for wisdom, an end for which it was not designed.'
