(Although the reviewer, Herschel Brickell -- a native of Yazoo City, Mississippi -- also tipped his hand a bit by praising the author for not being "afflicted with 'social consciousness'," which therefore prevented her book from becoming "a vehicle for propaganda, and its people representatives of the oppressed proletariat, wretched victims of race prejudice and economic injustice."
