Part IV, "Report on the Geology of the Route": All plates and woodcuts present; including 1 colorized. There is also an "Extracts from [Preliminary] Report" section at the front. There are 3 large, color fold-out charts at the rear: Geological Sections and Geological Map. The largest of the Geological Section chart has a crease and a closed tear on one edge. On the Volume title page, there is a printing error, omitting the "R" in "Report". Foxing to the smaller of the Geological Sections; light foxing to the other two, mostly in the margins and on the verso. Else charts clean. The binding is worn, but intact. Spine gilt completely faded. Foxing to the endpapers & page edges. Light foxing throughout. Leaves had been pressed between a few pages, causing some staining. Inquire for additional details, as needed. Other volumes from this series are also available. B. Mollhausen's (1825-1905) originals. A U.S. War Department report on "Exploration and surveys for a railroad route from the Mississippi River to the Pacific Ocean." Amiel Weeks Whipple (1817-63) was a lieutenant in command of topographical engineers on this 1853-54 expedition and was later killed at Chancellorsville.

First edition. Large quarto. Contents of vol IV are: Part V - "The Botany of the Expedition"; Part VI - "Report on the Zoology of the Expedition"; and various appendices to Lt. Whipples's report. (The zoology report was only partially completed in time for this publication, and the balance was printed in a subsequent volume.) The botanical part contains a General Description of the Botanical Character of the Country, a Description of Forest Trees (with special attention to those of California), Description of the Cactaceae, Descriptions of the General Botanical Collections, and Description of the mosses and liverworts. There is a very large profile map of trees that occurred on the route from the 35th parallel to the Pacific, engraved, and hand-colored. In addition there are many full-page engravings accompanying each of the botanical sections -- cactus (24), trees (26), and mosses (10). Occasional foxing. Original binding -- 1/2 leather over marbled boards -- rubbed and worn, but very sound. Very good copy.
