Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Condizione sovraccoperta: Good. 1st Edition. 290 pp. First edition with original dust jacket in protective sleeve, dust jacket has chips missing around edges but is mostly complete, some age-toning to dust jacket & book cover. In Then Shall the Dust Return Julian Green -- one of the most provoca…tive of modern writers -- has created a story of vivid and compelling power: a story of fasten itself upon the memory of the reader and transport him to another world of absorbing and richly fruitful speculation. it is woven of the lives of simple folk, of dreams and love and greed and crime and a strange, fatal spell exercised bya chain of black metal and great antiquity. The chain was cast up one day by the sea and found by young Hoël as he helped some scavengers on a wild coast of Wales. Secretly, he kept it, then gave it back to the sea. yet by this trivial incident was another chain, that of circumstance, forged -- to affect Hoël's life inescapably and link his destiny with others distant in time and station of life. The thread of narrative takes the reader finally to the present day, and affords him the unique experience of reading a love story by Julian Green with a happy ending. With all the subtlety of an acutely perceptive imagination Julian Green fashions and embroiders his tale to a thing of arresting and evocative fascination. Surely it is one of the most striking novels to come from his gifted, always unexpected pen.

Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. Two manuscripts. Quartos (9" x 11"). *Varouna*: [2], iv, [1], 345 foliated leaves. *Journal 1940-43*: [1], iii, 323 foliated leaves. Each bound in black textured cloth boards, very good or better. Two original manuscripts of the English translations, both presumably by James Whitall, written out… in ink on the rectos; with manuscript corrections. *Varouna* is signed at the bottom of the final leaf: "Paris June 1938 February 1940". First published in French in 1940, Whitall's English translation of Varouna was published in 1941 by Harper & Brothers under the title: *Then Shall the Dust Return*. The English manuscript of the *Journal, 1940-43*, written out in the same hand, likely was not published. *OCLC* records one French edition of the "Journal. Vol. 3, 1940-43" published in 1946 (*OCLC* 59116014). Born in Paris of American parents, Julien Green (1900-98) authored several remarkable novels, a four-volume autobiography: (The Green Paradise, The War at Sixteen, Love in America, Restless Youth), and a famous nineteen volume Diary (1919-98): published in France from 1938 to 2001. Green wrote primarily in French and was the first non-French national to be elected to the Académie française. This English manuscript translation of the "Journal 1940-43" was presumably made from the French edition of the *Diary*. An unusual set of two uncommon English manuscript translations of Green's *Varouna* and wartime journal from 1940-43.
