The wraps are in good condition (crease on front cover; discolored and faded along edges and spine; a circular spot on the back cover where a price tag was affixed). 8 3/4 x 5 ¾, 189 pages, 11 ounces. XX Preface: "The material in this volume, taken from the files of the DODGE CITY TIMES, represents a unique contemporary record of early-day events in the Texas Panhandle from 1877 to 1885. The editor of the TIMES made an inspection tour of the Panhandle in 1877, two years after Fort Elliott was established, and reports objectively and at length his observations of the activities of the people, the types of soil and other natural resources and features of the region. Lengthy quotations from the Mobeetie PANHANDLE, which began publication in 1881, preserve material from this early-day newspaper that is not otherwise available. No other source, published at the time, portrays so fully the affairs of this region during this early period." XX [From the introduction] "Until 1874 the only human inhabitants of the Texas Panhandle were the nomadic Plains Indians. The coming of buffalo hunters in that year, however, marked the beginning of the end of Indian occupation, for their presence provoked, at least in part, an Indian war that resulted in the U. S. Army's forcibly removing the red men to reservations which had been assigned to them in Indian Territory several years earlier. Within a relatively short time thereafter, sheep and cattle men began drifting into the Panhandle and establishing ranches. In 1875 the Army located Fort Elliott on Sweetwater Creek near the Texas-Indian Territory border to protect the prospective settlers from renegade Indians, horse thieves, and other undesirables. Adjacent the post the little village of Hidetown or Sweetwater City, later named Mobeetie, sprang up. It was from its inception a local supply source and an entertainment center for buffalo hunters, cowboys, and soldiers. Two other towns?Tascosa in 1876, some one hundred miles to the west, and Clarendon in 1878, some fifty miles to the southwest?were founded before the railroads came in 1887. Besides these, a number of stores were established at various places in the region. According to the census of 1880, the Panhandle possessed a population of 1,607 persons.
