A clean and attractive later Modern Library edition of Whitman's monumental poetic masterpiece, presented in the author's final 'deathbed edition' arrangement of 1891-1892. This Random House-era printing features the classic Modern Library dust jacket typogra…phy, plain cream endpapers, and numerous black-and-white woodcut illustrations by Valenti Angelo. Whitman's expansive free verse and democratic vision transformed American literature and established Leaves of Grass as one of the foundational texts of modern poetry. Poems including Song of Myself, I Sing the Body Electric, and Out of the Cradle Endlessly Rocking remain central works in the American canon. Book condition: Very Good+. Brown cloth boards remain clean and structurally sound with light rubbing, faint surface scuffing to the rear board, and mild softening at spine ends. Gilt spine lettering remains present though slightly dulled. Binding firm and square. Interior exceptionally clean and bright with no ownership marks observed. Dust jacket condition: Very Good. Unclipped jacket retains original $7.95 price and presents well overall, with moderate toning, light edgewear, and a few small chips/short tears concentrated at the spine ends and upper rear corner. No major loss or heavy creasing. Later Modern Library printing, likely early-to-mid 1970s, based on the Random House imprint, jacket price, ML jacket code '394-60410-5,' plain cream endpapers, later torchbearer binding device, and dust jacket credited to R. D. Scudellari. Not a first Modern Library edition. Walt Whitman (1819-1892) is widely regarded as one of the defining voices of American literature. First publishing Leaves of Grass in 1855 and revising it throughout his life, Whitman pioneered free verse poetry and created a distinctly American literary voice centered on democracy, individuality, labor, sexuality, and the natural world.
