These dishes are the remembrances of and/or the creations of Marylou Whitney, who with her husband Cornelius were among America's wealthiest families (he being related to the Vanderbilts AND the Whitneys). They owned one of the grand Horse Farms near Lexington, Kentucky and were known for their opulent Derby parties every year. This book, simply copied Marylou's own handwriting, and starts with 4 pages of her childhood memories, before the recipes begin. There is a light negligible stain along the bottom edge of the front cover and another on the bottom spine corner on the rear. This is the story of an Air Force Colonel. the author begins his account by describing his departure from MacDill Field, Tampa, FL on 3/27/42 headed for the war in the Pacific by way of India, but he is detoured from New Delhi to Cairo & then on to Alamein, he writes much of his association with his counterparts in the RAF, & the direction of Gen. Montgomery in his fight against Rommel. Eventually he does get to Iwo Jima & the presence of Gen. MacArthur. An unusual, fascinating, & close-up view of WWII from a U.S. air force officer who ends up following the war around the globe. Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney (1899-1992) was the grandson of Cornelius Vanderbilt and William C. Whitney, as well as the son of Harry Payne Whitney. He was a financier who co-founded the Aviation Corporation of the Americas and Pan American Airways, and co-produced Gone With The Wind. During World War II he served as staff officer in the U.S. Army Air Forces, rising to the rank of colonel. He served in President Harry S. Truman's administration as the first assistant secretary of the newly independent U.S. Air Force (1947-49) and then as undersecretary of commerce (1949-50). But in the city of its origin, it caused a public outcry - a battle between beloved socialite and philanthropist Marylou Whitney and Saratoga County historian Violet Dunn. First the story. The oft-told tale is set in 1853. It portrays Vanderbilt, known as "The Commodore," as a finicky diner at Moon s Lake House on Saratoga Lake who, when served french fried potatoes that he deemed too fat, ordered them back to the kitchen. The irked chef, George Crum, sliced a tuber so thin that the pieces crisped when fried, sprinkled them generously with salt and sent them back to Vanderbilt s table. "The Commodore" loved them. And thus the Saratoga chip - and all other potato chips to follow - was allegedly born. The spat between Whitney and Dunn started nearly 125 years later in 1976 when a friend of Whitney's sent her a printed version of the story. The following year, Whitney, wife of Cornelius Vanderbilt Whitney, grabbed onto the legend and made it the centerpiece of her ball, the glittering gala she hosted annually to usher in the Whitney Stakes at the Saratoga Race Course.
