Obwohl eher konservativen Geschmacks und Autoren wie Carl Spitteler, Arnold Ott und Adolf Frey zugetan, förderte er auch Talente wie Robert Walser, Ricarda Huch und Hermann Hesse. Als Dichter blieb W. in seinen Erzählungen, Versdichtungen, Theaterstücken und Libretti epigonal. Aus seiner umfangreichen Korrespondenz sind die Briefwechsel mit Henriette Feuerbach, Huch, Gottfried Keller, Spitteler und Clara Schumann veröffentlicht.
