In pencil below this is the name "Jospeh Pomeroy". Large 8vo. (24 cm.) two volumes in one, each with separate title and pagination. Pt. I: Civilizations and Their Diseases, 123p.; Part II: Rebuilding a Wrecked World Civilization, 176p. On the last page of the book, the author as put below his printed name the printed description, "An American Engleman." Green cloth with gilt letters on the spine. Very minor wear to extremities with nothing rubbed through, gilt dulled, cloth clean, else very good to near fine with no other internal markings. Joseph Pomeroy Widney [1841-1938] was a polymathic pioneer American physician, clergyman, entrepreneur-philanthropist, proto-environmentalist, prohibitionist, racial theorist, and prolific author. He was the second President of the University of Southern California in Los Angeles and the founding dean of the USC School of Medicine. He was one of the founders and first general superintendents of the Church of the Nazarene, and primary founder of the Los Angeles County Medical Association. One of the "most conspicuous Southern Californians of his generation", Widney was a cultural leader in Los Angeles for nearly seventy years."
