While soldering, Wilcox's diary covered the period of time from April 30, 1860 and August 30, 1863. Here printed is only that portion relating to his experiences just prior, during and following the Vicksburg Campaign. He benefited from duty at Regimental Headquarters as the Sergeant Major and gained a larger understanding of events. This is an enlisted man's diary; he did not receive his Captaincy until after the date his diary ends. Fine publication by the Illinois State Historical Society. The issue also includes a fine article by M.M. Quaife on the Ordnance of 1787 and merchants in Illinois Country by Charles Thomas. REFERENCE: Dornbusch Ill 168.
