Published jointly by the Alberta Sport, Recreation, Parks & Wildlife Foundation and A.S.R.P.W., this book documents the founding of the Peaceful Valley Project, a unique public-private partnership dedicated to improving quality of life for the elderly disabled and terminally ill in central Alberta. Conceived by siblings Robert R. Wark (1917-2001), noted art historian and longtime Curator of Art Collections at the Huntington Library, and Kathleen S. Wark (b. 1917), retired accountant of the Alberta Research Council, the project originated from the siblings? 1980 purchase of meadowland overlooking the Battle River Valley. Their vision - a day-use park and lodge ensuring perpetual outdoor enjoyment for Albertans - was realized through cooperation with provincial agencies and volunteers, culminating in the creation of the Peaceful Valley Day Lodge. Contents include: Flowers and Meadows; The Search for a Partner; Gathering Evidence; The Agreement; Interlude; Planning, Money, Construction; Appendix: Contributors to the Peaceful Valley Day Lodge; Index. [From back cover] It was during their search for an antique bathtub in the summer of 1980 that Kathleen Wark and her brother Bob discovered, much to their delight, a meadow in central Alberta, carpeted with wild flowers and commanding a picture-perfect view of the Battle River Valley. The property overlooked Peaceful Valley, so named by Superintendent Mr. J. Scoffield of the Wetaskiwin School District in the early 20th century. The subsequent purchase of the property by the Warks was their first step to establishing a day-use park for the elderly disabled and terminally ill. But, both Kay and Bob Wark knew that to accomplish an undertaking of this size, they would require a process and partners. The Peaceful Valley Project is about the vision of two individuals and how their gift of land in a trust will provide enjoyment in an out-of-doors setting to Albertans, in perpetuity. It's also the story of how individuals and government worked together to establish the Peaceful Valley Day Lodge, a philanthropic accomplishment worthy of praise.
