Published at the height of the international dance-band craze, "Isle of Capri" paired Austrian composer Wilhelm "Will" Grosz with Irish lyricist Jimmy Kennedy, becoming an immediate worldwide…sensation after recordings by Ray Noble, Al Bowlly, and numerous dance orchestras. The cover features celebrated bandleader and violinist Xavier Cugat, whose performances helped popularize Latin rhythms and tango-influenced music with American audiences. Originally published as a "Sensational European Tango Fox-Trot," the song reached No. 1 in the United States in early 1935 and became an enduring standard recorded by Frank Sinatra, Bing Crosby, Rosemary Clooney, Fats Domino, and many others. Condition: Very Good. Original wraps remain securely attached with no spine separation. Moderate handling wear, light edge rubbing, scattered cover creasing, and age toning consistent with use. Interior music pages remain clean and fully legible. A faint pencil notation appears on the cover. Excellent provenance in the form of a contemporary black ownership stamp from Bay Music Co., Santa Monica, California, reading in part: "Bay Music Co. - A Complete Music and Radio Store - Santa Monica." The reverse cover bears the original publisher advertisement for songs from Jerome Kern's The Cat and the Fiddle, helping firmly date the issue to its original 1934 publication. First edition sheet music, copyright MCMXXXIV (1934) by The Peter Maurice Music Co., Ltd., published in the United States by T.B. Harms Co. Plate number 429-4, matching first-issue examples held by major institutional collections. The Bay Music Co. retailer stamp is a particularly appealing piece of period provenance. Independent neighborhood music stores were once the primary source for new sheet music, phonograph records, radios, and musical instruments. Surviving retailer stamps like this one document the original commercial life of a piece before the decline of sheet-music storefronts after World War II. Jimmy Kennedy (1902-1984) was one of the twentieth century's most successful lyricists. Born in Northern Ireland, he wrote numerous international standards, including Red Sails in the Sunset, South of the Border, Teddy Bears' Picnic (new lyrics), and Isle of Capri. Wilhelm "Will" Grosz (1894-1939) was an Austrian-born composer and pianist who emigrated to England after fleeing Nazi persecution. Though trained as a classical composer, he became famous for sophisticated popular songs including Isle of Capri and Red Sails in the Sunset. Xavier Cugat (1900-1990), pictured on the cover, was one of America's most influential Latin bandleaders. His orchestra introduced millions of listeners to tango, rumba, and other Latin dance styles during the 1930s and 1940s, making his appearance on period sheet music highly collectible.
