Während eines Constitutionsfestes in Gaibach, das dem berühmten Hambacher Fest (27. Mai 1832) folgte, wurde er verhaftet. Es folgten langjährige Haftaufenthalte aufgrund der Anklage des "Versuches zum Hochverrat". Erst 1848 wurde er voll rehabilitiert. Seine staatsrechtliche Schrift stellt eine deutsche Kernschrift zum liberalen Konstitutionalismus dar, die stark von naturrechtlichem Gedankengut getragen ist.
