Als Beispiel für die erstgenannte dieser drei Komponenten wird in diesem Beitrag die Europa-I-Rakete behandelt und hierbei insbesondere die in Deutschland gefertigte 3. Stufe. Von den zahlreichen, bei der Ent wicklung und Fertigung dieser Raketenstufe aufgetretenen Probleme stehen diejenigen im Vordergrund, die aus der speziellen Flugmission dieser Stufe resultieren. Da der Arbeitsbereich der 3. Stufe in Höhen zwischen 200 und 500 km liegt, sind umfangreiche Simulationsanlagen nötig, in denen eine Erprobung der Rakete unter Höhenbedingungen am Erdboden erfolgen kann. Diese in ihrer Konzeption hochmodernen Prüfstände für die 3. Stufe der Europa-I-Rakete befinden sich in Lampoldshausen bei Heilbronn. Die Arbeitsweise dieser Anlagen wird eingehend erklärt, wobei die wichtigsten Bauelemente näher erläutert werden. Die Notwendigkeit derartiger Prüf stände folgt aus einer Anzahl konstruktiver Änderungen an der Rakete, die sich bei den V ersuchen als notwendig erwiesen hatten und ohne die es mit Sicherheit zu einer starken Beeinträchtigung der Funktionsfähigkeit der Rakete im Fluge gekommen wäre.
