This is General Hazen's critical response to George Custer's over-enthusiastic report of the Northern Pacific Railroad country observed during…the latter's 1873 Yellowstone Expedition. A bitter controversy developed between Hazen and Custer over this land, and the publication of this pamphlet was a part of the feud. Hazen wrote that the land was arid and worthless while Custer responded with descriptions of its great beauty and potential. In the end, as shown today, Custer was right. The pamphlet was published in 1875 and is rare today and expensive. Here is an opportunity to own a facsimile of the original publication. Hazen and Custer had a long history going back to when Custer was a cadet at West Point and Hazen was an artillery instructor.
