Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book details the origination, development, and widespread adoption of the New York Point System of tactile literature and music, and how it transformed education for the visually impaired. After assuming leadership of the New York Institution for the Blind in 1863, the author began an intensive examination of the education system for the blind. The review of reading proficiency revealed the majority of students were unable to read at all, while only a few were proficient. The author determined that the commonly accepted system, the Boston Line, was deficient in several aspects: it lacked tangibility, writability, and adaptability to musical notation. Drawing on the work of others, most notably Adam McClelland, the author devised a new system based on embossed points arranged on vertical and horizontal axes, which was both more efficient and economical than the Boston Line. The author's system was formally introduced in 1868 and quickly gained wider acceptance within the field of education for the visually impaired, forever changing the landscape of tactile literature and music. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book examines the longstanding debate surrounding the best tactile reading system for the blind. In 1905, the American Association of Workers for the Blind appointed a committee tasked with investigating different potential systems for adoption. The resulting 1913 report of this committee, known as the Uniform Type Committee, sparked controversy and raised important questions about the nature of tactile reading systems. The author critically analyzes the committee's report and the reading tests it conducted, arguing that the results were influenced by biased practices. The book delves into the history of tactile reading systems, explores the strengths and weaknesses of different approaches, and considers the broader implications for the education and literacy of blind people. Ultimately, the book provides valuable insights into the ongoing search for an optimal tactile reading system for the blind community.

This book presents a groundbreaking system of musical script for the blind, authored by a prominent figure in the field. The system is designed to be tangible and legible through touch, allowing visually impaired individuals to engage with music both as listeners and performers. Unlike previous systems, this one combines pitch and time indications into a single character, offering a simplified yet comprehensive approach to musical notation. Delving into the broader context of music education for the blind, the book examines the challenges faced in teaching and learning without visual cues. The author's deep understanding of both music and tactile perception is evident in the innovative solutions presented. The proposed system not only addresses the need for accessible notation, but also facilitates the teaching of music theory, intervals, and chords, enriching the musical experience for blind individuals. Ultimately, this book is a testament to the power of inclusion and the transformative potential of accessible education. It empowers blind musicians with the tools they need to fully participate in the joys of music-making, fostering a more equitable society and expanding the boundaries of musical expression. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…
