Illustrations are generally taken from old books, and include an extract from Durer's Triumphal Arch, The Emperor Maximilian from Durer's Triumphal Car, ornamental letters from the Playing Boys alphabet, page ornaments from Basle Books about 1530, a boat propelled by wheel after a 1552 woodcut, a Virginia Lady by Vecellio, 1590, the mark of the printer Sessa, of Venice, and portraits of Melanchthon, by Lucas Cranach, Erasmus, by Deutsch, after Holbein, and Bilibald Pirkheimer, by Tobias Stimmer, after Durer.
