Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition, Illustrated Edition. Adventures of the Mind: From The Saturday Evening Post. Edited by Richard Thruelsen and John Kobler, with an introduction by Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and Columbia University professor Mark Van Doren. New York: Alfred A. Knopf, 1960. Fourth Printing, January 1960. 285 pages. A remarkable mid-century anthology bringing together major figures in science, philosophy, literature, history, religion, architecture, modern art, music, linguistics and cultural criticism. Originally drawn from essays appearing in The Saturday Evening Post, the collection provides a compelling snapshot of American intellectual culture at the close of the 1950s. The volume opens with an introduction by Mark Van Doren, the Pulitzer Prize-winning poet, critic and celebrated longtime Columbia University professor. Of particular historical interest, Mark Van Doren was the father of Charles Van Doren, the Columbia academic who became a national television celebrity as a contestant on NBC's Twenty-One before becoming the central figure in the celebrated television quiz-show scandal. Charles Van Doren publicly admitted before a congressional committee on November 2, 1959, that he had participated in the deception surrounding the program. This copy is the January 1960 fourth printing, placing its production only months after Charles Van Doren's congressional confession and at a remarkable moment in the history of the Van Doren family's public reputation and American intellectual culture. The connection is contextual rather than associative: Charles Van Doren did not contribute to this volume, but his father Mark supplied its introduction. The juxtaposition is particularly interesting because Adventures of the Mind celebrates intellectual inquiry and presents serious ideas to a broad popular audience—the same period in which Charles Van Doren's television fame had transformed a young Columbia scholar into a nationally recognized symbol of intellectual achievement. Mark and Charles Van Doren Historical Context Mark Van Doren was one of the distinguished American literary scholars of his generation, a Pulitzer Prize-winning poet and longtime professor of English at Columbia University. His son Charles Van Doren was likewise a Columbia academic when he became nationally famous through his appearances on the television quiz program Twenty-One. His apparent command of an extraordinary range of knowledge turned him into an intellectual celebrity during the 1950s. The story collapsed during the television quiz-show investigations. On November 2, 1959, Charles admitted before congressional investigators that he had been supplied questions and answers in connection with Twenty-One. His association with the scandal became one of the defining episodes in the early history of American television. The timing gives this particular printing an intriguing historical context: the copyright page identifies it as the Fourth Printing, January 1960, only a short time after Charles Van Doren's nationally publicized confession. No claim of ownership, provenance or direct association with Charles Van Doren is made; the significance is the documented father-son relationship and Mark Van Doren's role as the author of the introduction. Accordingly, this copy is accurately described as the Fourth Printing, January 1960, rather than a fourth edition. Please refer to photographs for additional condition detail; photographs form part of the description. .The January 1960 printing also places the volume at an extraordinary moment in the history of the Van Doren family, appearing shortly after the 1959 congressional testimony of Mark Van Doren's son Charles during the notorious television quiz-show scandal.…

Paperback. Condizione: New. Print on Demand. This book offers a first-hand account of the political upheaval that took place in Upper Canada in the 1800s. The author, a British settler, chronicles the events leading up to the rebellion in vivid detail, providing insights into the social and political tensions of the era. Through personal experiences and firsthand observations, the book explores the motivations and actions of the rebels and their supporters. The author examines the role of external influences, such as the American Revolution, and discusses the complexities of colonial governance and the struggle for self-determination. The book not only recounts the battles and skirmishes, but also delves into the broader historical context and the impact of the rebellion on the development of Canadian society and identity. It sheds light on the challenges faced by settlers and the complexities of governing a diverse and rapidly changing colony. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format. In rare cases, an imperfection in the original, such as a blemish or missing page, may be replicated in the book. print-on-demand item.…

Aggiungi al carrelloThree vintage gatherings of the periodical "Film Music Notes" (FMN), comprising all 26 issues published in 1942 through 1944, bound in three volumes, each with titled wrappers, "Film Music Notes / 1942," "Film Music Notes / 1943," and "Film Music Notes / 1944," with manuscript graphite, red, and blue pencil annotations on 39 pages of fourteen issues. The three gatherings found here comprise the first full three years of the periodical's publication, beginning with "Volume I / January, 1942 / Number IV" and ending with "Volume IV / December, 1944 / Number III." Detailed inventory available upon request. The three bound gatherings are: "Film Music Notes / 1942," comprised of all eight issues published in 1942, from Vol. 1 No. IV through Vol. II No. III, with each issue ranging from seven to nine pages. (In 1942 FMN published only eight issues, rather than the nine found in 1943 and 1944, combining the May and June issues into one "May-June 1942" issue, Vol. II No. III.) "Film Music Notes / 1943," comprised of all nine issues published in 1943, from Vol. II No. IV through Vol. III No. III, with each issue ranging from eight to twelve pages. "Film Music Notes / 1944," comprised of all nine issues published in 1944, from Vol. III No. IV through Vol. IV No. III, with each issue ranging from eleven to twenty three pages. The first issue of FMN, Vol. 1, No. 1 (not included in the bound volumes here), was published in October 1941, and was spearheaded largely by the efforts of a group of Hollywood women on behalf of the National Federation of Music Clubs (the Federation). On June 1, 1941, as part of the "Festival of Motion Pictures" at the Federation's biennial American Music Festival, the Federation, feeling the Academy Awards were not adequately recognizing musicians and composers, held their first film music awards night. The overwhelming success of the awards night, as well as growing requests from music educators for resources and advise on how to teach about film music, lead Federation members, headed by chairperson Grace Widney Mabee, to begin the publication of the groundbreaking periodical four months later, which, during its inception, was largely built upon the Federation's existing structures and resources. In 1943, FMN was integral to the formation of the National Film Music Council (NFMC), created largely by Federation members and FMN contributors and editors, Mabee, Sigmund Spaeth (FMN Advisory Chairman), Constance Purdy (FMN editor), and others, and was announced in the "Foreword" of FMN, Vol. 2, No.1, October, 1943, found in the volumes offered here. FMN continued publication for seventeen years, ending in 1958. Issues of FMN are generally comprised of a "Foreword," followed by "Comments and Open Forum" (which by the November 1942 issue, Vol. II, No. II, had transitioned to "News Items"), film reviews (which focus on the use of music in film, and range from five to 28 reviews per issue), as well as various articles, essays, and biographies. Regular contributing authors found in the three bound volumes here include: Gail Kubik (composer), Margery Morrison (FMN Associate Editor), Purdy (actress, musician, and FMN Editor), Naomi Reynolds (of The Musician's Congress), and Spaeth (musicologist, author, and FMN Advisory Chairman). Contributing authors found in the volumes on offer here, include: Composers: Scott Bradley, Rudy De Saxe, Adolph Deutsch, Nat W. Finston, Arthur Kleiner, William Lava, Vernon Leftwich, Alfred Newman, Miklós Rózsa, David Rudhyar, Jack Schaindlin, Max Steiner, Herbert Stothart, Franz Waxman, Roy Webb, and Charles Wolcott. As well as: Alice Evans Field (MPPDA studio liason), Chauncey Haines, Jr. (musician), Hal Hall ("The American Cinematographer" editor), John Huntley (British film historian), Isabel Morse Jones (LA Times critic and musician), Jay Leyda (experimental filmmaker), Louis Lipstone (head of Paramount Pictures music department), Harry Mines (LA Daily News critic), Ivan Narodny (Russian revolutionary and émigré), Mildred Norton (LA Daily News critic), Cecil Stokes (creator of the Auroratone), and Dr. Bruno David Ussher (musicologist and LA music critic). Articles found in the volumes on offer here, include: "Cartoon Music of the Future," "[George Pal's] Puppetoons," "The Auroratone," "Scoring the Jungle Book," "Russian Music," "The Importance of Motion Picture Music," "Music in Government Films," a "Special Article" on Constantin Bakaleinikoff (composer and Director of Music Department of RKO-Radio), "Music of the Americas," "Screen Music Assumes New Stature," "Procedure of Preparing a Musical Score for a Picture," "José Iturbi Comes to the Screen," "[Dmitri] Shostakovich - Film Composer," "A Visit to the Music Recording Stage at Warner Bros.," "What Music Arranging Does for the Pictures," "An Afternoon in the Home of Erich Wolfgang Korngold," "New Russian Music Born of War," "The Sixth Sense in Film Mechanics," "Notes on the Life and Works of Aaron Copland," "Rhapsody in Blue: A Day on the Gershwin Set," "British Film Music," "Mexican Films in Hollywood," and "An Institute of Music in Contemporary Life," among many others. Both items bifoliums; and both in good condition, with thin strip of paper from mount adhering to the reverse of the second leaf. ONE: 3pp, 12mo. He begins by saying that he has seen Sir Henry Thompson (1820-1904), who 'cannot possibly meet us to-morrow but he will be at Dr Coplands at 3.40 on Thursday That is the day of my Law Case but I will be there if I can'. In the meantime 'it might be well to suspend the injections of Bladder until you see Sir Henry as he seems to be opposed to them and trust to the iron the bladder of ice, and the frequent introduction into the rectum of small pieces of ice, with the edges rounded off in water & well greased'. TWO: 2pp, 12mo. Headed 'Sunday Evening | Dr. James Copland's case'. The letter begins: 'Dear Dr Cleveland | I fear that the poor Doctor is almost beyond our Art. I think he is sinking more from uraemia than fresh haemorrhage and I have recommended a large [?] over the stomach'. He also thinks that Copland 'ought to have his bowels freely acted on either by a strong Cathartic enema, or if this fails, by one or two drops of Croton Oil by mouth. This I have left for you to decide.' Copland died two days after the writing of this letter. From the distinguished autograph collection of the psychiatrist Richard Alfred Hunter (1923-1981), whose collection of 7000 works relating to psychiatry is now in Cambridge University Library.
