Lee Dorsett (St. Louis physician, naval historian, and author Edward Lee Dorsett, 1883-1967) on front pastedown. Dulled yellow text block edges with intentional speckling; moisture staining to top edge and upper fore-edge. Some toning to interior leaves. Near top of title page is antiquarian ink signature "Henry Rutgers" (matching examples found online) along with facsimile signature style ink stamp "WB Crosby." Boards and text block secured by trimmed clear mylar dj for presentation. Bibliographic reference: Wright Howes U.S.IANA #C-518. Exceptional Revolutionary War and War of 1812 association via past (and likely original) owner Henry Rutgers (1745-1830), a scion of prominent New York City merchant and land-holding family, who advocated for American independence from Great Britain and served as a captain at the Battle of White Plains later rising to the rank of colonel in the New York militia. Rutgers' post-Revolution years were marked by political involvement and extensive philanthropy as he served in the New York State Assembly and on the New York Board of Education Regents. In June 1812 Rutgers participated in organizing New York forces in foresightful anticipation of British hostilities for the upcoming War of 1812. However Rutgers' donations to Queen's College in New Brunswick, New Jersey which became Rutgers University in 1825 remain his most notable legacy. Further advancing the book's Rutgers provenance is the aforementioned W.B. Crosby ink stamp which would be William Bedlow Crosby (1786-1865) who owned a mansion on Manhattan's Rutgers Place between Jefferson and Clinton Streets and whose parents evidently had a close connection to Colonel Rutgers as Crosby had a short-lived sibling named Henry Rutgers Crosby (1787-1788). …
