With a gift inscription signed by the author. A truly fascinating account of a traveller's experience in the late nineteenth century, offering insights into how others saw us. You might think, when you read the section on railways, that little has changed for the better on British railways since 1875- or that if they once did, they have come full circle back to the situation of the 1870s. Condition: Unfortunately this book has two significant areas of damage, so buy it to read and enjoy, until a better copy comes along. Two separate pages have had an expenses table cut out and then clumsily taped back (see photographs). The boards are rubbed but sound, the text block sound, and there is just occasional foxing and age-tanning, especially to the prelims. Without the page-slicing, the volume would be classified as good to very good.
