Hardcover. Condizione: Very Good. No Jacket. 1st Edition. 22 x 13 cm, [851] pp., Contained in Messages from the President of the United States to the two Houses of Congress, at the Commencement of the First Session of the Thirty-First Session of the Thirty-First Congress. [At top] 31st Congress, 1st Sess.[Ho. OF Reps] H. Ex. Doc.No 5 (THIS REPORT PAGES 281-293), new dark blue leatherette binding with gilt lettering. This report is intelligent and exciting including a potentially deadly encounter on March 17, 1849 in which five bands of Apache warrior, about 200 in all, surrounded the dozen or so soldiers. A friendly chief, Cigarrito, extricated them from the extremely hostile chief of the whole band. The next day Cigarrito showed them Limpia Canyon which provides a good passage across the whole rugged range now known as the Davis Mountains. (My father, Ernest Jesse Palmer (1875-1962) used Limpia Canyon as his base for two (spring and fall) thrilling and successful botanical exploration trips in 1926. He published the results in the Journal of the Arnold Arboretum in 1927.) The whole volume contains other items of California, Texas and western USA interest, but Whiting is by far the most interesting.
