Wraps. Condizione: Very Good. 1st Edition. Offered is an Address entitled "Following the Drinking Gourd!" ("An Address Given at the First Unitarian Church, Los Angeles, on August 14, 1960, by the Rev. William Howard Melish, New York Representative of the Southern Conference Educational Fund") and published in mimeographed print form in that year by the First Unitarian Church of Los Angeles, measuring 8-1/2" by 14" and containing six-and-one-half pages of text. A few brief excerpts from this lengthy address: "[W]e are witnessing the emergence of a remarkable Negro leadership - diverse, widespread and dynamic. This phenomenon became apparent when the Montgomery Bus Protest ushered in the present period of struggle" - "Joined with him [E. Edgar D. Daniel Nixon] in this enterprise was one of the most remarkable young clergymen in the South, the Reverend Martin Luther King, Jr." - "The white community was incredulous at first" - "There are no night riders today in Alabama. The members of the Ku Klux Klan and White Citizens Councils have been sworn in as deputies" - "Carl Braden and I visited the Reverend Fred Shuttlesworth in his home in Birmingham, reputed to be the worst industrial city in the country in the matter of race relations, where the chief of police is the notorious 'Bull' Connor" - "In Shreveport, Louisiana, my wife and I called on a Negro dentist who is leading the struggle for justice in the northern part of that troubled state. We found him in an optimistic mood. He told us the students were on the move" - "The effect of the student sit-ins upon the South has been profound" - "That same Saturday night, obviously by pre-arrangement and intended to serve as a warning, in at least five different cities as widely separated as Miami, Tampa, St. Petersburg and Jacksonville, there were tossed on the lawns and porches of integrationists facsimile wooden rifles. Police reported next day that they had collected 120. These rifles were identical, mass-produced in some carpenter's shop with wood-turning machinery. To the stock of each rifle was attached a crude printed flier, a photograph of which I hold here in my hands. It bears this warning: 'DEATH TO ALL RACE MIXERS - Keep White Public Schools WHITE by Massive Armed Force! BE A Paul Revere! Rally Your Neighbors to ARMS - SHOOT The Race-Mixing INVADERS!" Folded once, as issued.

Rev. William Howard Melish's funeral address for W.E.B. Du Bois, in which he provides a biography of Du Bois and his intellectual and activist evolution. Melish was a radical Episcopelian who joined the American Labor Party and who was a prominent civil rights supporter. He was ousted from his Brooklyn church during the McCarthy era due to his relationships with the USSR and the CPUSA. Following Melish's address are the concluding prayers and tributes from various figures. Stapled, photo-illustrated wrappers (8 ½" x 5 ½"), 24 p. Faint foxing and toning to wrappers. Less than a dozen copies in WorldCat.
