La traduction a été procurée par le polyglotte Jean-Baptiste Lefebvre de Villebrune, à partir de deux lettres lues devant la Royal Society de Londres, puis publiées dans le volume 73 des Philosophical Transactions*. - La première lettre, traduite de l'anglais, avait été adressée par William Hamilton (1730-1803), célèbre collectionneur d'antiquités, volcanologue amateur et diplomate écossais, au botaniste et président de la Royal Society, Joseph Banks (1743-1820). L'auteur y décrit les effets des séismes de février et mai 1783, qui dévastèrent la Calabre. - La seconde, traduite de l'italien, avait été adressé par le maquis Francesco Ippolito, natif de Catanzaro, à Hamilton. Cette plaquette compte parmi les nombreuses publications dues à William Hamilton sur les volcans de l'Italie du sud. Hamilton est aussi bien célèbre pour sa vie privée, en particulier pour le scandale qu'avait provoqué, dans la société anglaise, l'adultère consenti de son épouse Emma Hamilton avec l'amiral Nelson.
