Drawing on new research as well as period journals and diaries, this study provides a detailed account of the battle of Chancellorsville and assesses the factors that led to a Confederate victory. Ernest B. "Pat" Furgurson was a distinguished journalist and graceful writer. He spent more than 40 years as a newspaperman, most of them at The Baltimore Sun, where he was a correspondent, Washington bureau chief, and national affairs columnist. He was the author of biographies of William Westmoreland and Jesse Helms and of four widely praised books on the Civil War, including Chancellorsville, 1863 and Freedom Rising. He also wrote scores of magazine articles for National Geographic, Reader's Digest, and other publications. The focus of his Sun column was often forgotten people in forgotten places. He graduated from the Columbia School of Journalism. After serving from 1953 to 1955 as an officer in the Marine Corps, he worked for papers in Roanoke and Richmond before joining the Sun in 1956. His column was syndicated by the Los Angeles Times Syndicate. He retired from the Sun in 1992. He was active in the Civil War Preservation Trust. For 130 years historians and military strategists have been obsessed by the battle of Chancellorsville. It began with an audaciously planned stroke by Union general Joe Hooker as he sent his army across the Rappahannock River and around Robert E. Lee's lines. It ended with that same army fleeing back in near total disarray -- and Hooker's reputation in ruins. This splendid account of Chancellorsville -- the first in more than 35 years -- explains Lee's most brilliant victory even as it places the battle within the larger canvas of the Civil War. The Battle of Chancellorsville, April 30 May 6, 1863, was a major battle of the American Civil War (18611865), and the principal engagement of the Chancellorsville campaign. Confederate General Robert E. Lee's decision to divide his army in the presence of a much larger enemy force resulted in a significant Confederate victory, described by some historians as Lee's "perfect battle". The victory, a product of Lee's audacity and Union general Joseph Hooker's timid decision-making, was tempered by heavy casualties, including Lt. Gen. Thomas J. "Stonewall" Jackson. Jackson was hit by friendly fire. He died of pneumonia eight days later, a loss that Lee likened to losing his right arm.
