Early edition. i-xxiv, 25-672 pages. Hardcover: H 22cm x L 15.5cm. No dust jacket. Blue cloth with some rubbing and light staining/soiling; spine ends and board corners bumped/scuffed; small frayed cloth loss at spine head; spine mildly sunned with gilt stamping dulled but still easily legible; front board's gilt stamping comparatively brighter but still with some flaking/rubbing loss. Usual toning to text block edges with small stains that shallowly affect page margins. Green decorative motif to front and rear endpapers; early/mid-20th century ink ownership signature (a Columbus, Mississippi resident) at top of front pastedown; some interior foxing/toning usually strongest at b/w plates and their adjacent pages along with some soiling and small stains. Glue repair to subtle surface paper tear at lower front hinge but binding remains firm. A much nicer copy than usually encountered as none of the book's multiple editions were encumbered by quality production. With unpaged b/w frontispiece portrait of Davis retaining its tissue guard plus other b/w illustrated plates, portraits, and facsimiles interspersed throughout most on paged leaves but a few unpaged. Historian Allan Nevins complements the book as the "best collection of eulogies to the Confederate president; some useful data will be found among the testimonials" ("Civil War Books, A Critical Bibliography" Volume II-page 68). The book was first published in 1889 in Richmond, Virginia by B.F. Johnson & Co. who also issued a reprint in 1890. Evidently the book was licensed to other publishers in 1890 undoubtedly for subscription and door-to-door sales for, in addition to this uncommon New Orleans imprint, OCLC cites editions issued in Dallas, Waco, Atlanta, and Chattanooga.
