This book examines the life and presidency of Martin Van Buren, the eighth president of the United States and the successor to Andrew Jackson. The author traces Van Buren's rise from humble beginnings to his role as a political kingmaker and his eventual election to the highest office in the land. The book also explores the tumultuous events of Van Buren's presidency, including the Panic of 1837 and the subsequent financial crisis. The author argues that Van Buren's handling of these crises, as well as his commitment to the principles of democracy and equality, make him an important and underappreciated figure in American history.
