Year Book Dntchess County Historical Society 1978 Mary Beatrice d'Este, the only daughter of Alfonso IV, Duke of Modena, was born October 5, 1658, at Modena, Italy. In 1673, she married James Stuart, Duke of York, upon whom his b…rother, King Charles II, had conferred rights of Proprietor of the Province of New York. She was Dutchess of York for twelve years and for three years Queen of England. When the Protestant revolution overthrew the Stuarts, James II and Mary fled to France. She died at St. Germains, May 7, 1718. The Colonial Laws of New York, Volume 1, pages 121-122, "AN ACT to divide this province and dependencies into shires and Count-yes." Passed November 1, 1683: "The Dutchess's County to bee from the bounds of the County of West-chester, on the South side of the High-lands, along the East side of Hudsons River as farre as Roelof Jansens Creeke, & East-ward into the woods twenty miles." We are now encouraging submissions for the 1988 Yearbook which will commemorate the "Bicentennial of the Nine Original Towns." They were created in March, 1788 by New York State. The nine towns are Amenia, Beekman, Clinton, Fishkill, Northeast, Pawling, Town of Poughkeepsie, Rhinebeck and Washington. Articles should be no longer than 7500 words of double-spaced typescript. Inclusion of photographs, line drawings or other illustrative materials is encouraged. Bibliographic material and endnotes should be included if appropriate. Kennon Moody FDR often identified his occupation as "farmer". This account details his dedication to farming. He expanded his ancestral farm more than twofold…,^ in spite of his involvement in public affairs. F. Kennon Moody is Dean at Dutchess County Community College. On July 9, 1943, Sir Harold R. L. G. Alexander led the combined English and American military forces into Sicily to pave the way for the later invasion of Italy. Before that campaign ended six weeks later more than 75,000 Americans had lost their lives. In that same month of July 1943 the mail room at the White House received a letter from a gentleman in Ohio. Even as the Allied forces were seeking to regain a military foothold on the European land-mass, the writer notes that he had seen a story which mentioned the fact that F.D.R. had eggs for sale at Hyde Park. I would appreciate receiving a couple of dozen eggs, , for which I am enclosing a money order for $1.25. You may send me the difference in war stamps. 1 These two events in July 1943 symbolize, in a sense, the dilemma provided by the person of F.D.R. for those attempting to. characterize the myth of the man Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The perception others held of him were wide and varied. Was he the wartime farmer attempting to sell eggs at $1.25 per two dozen from his Hyde Park estate? Or was he the Commander-in-Chief of the American forces currently losing their lives in places such as Sicily? In his excellent study of the American Political Tradition Richard Hofstadter entitled his chapter on Roosevelt "The Patrician as Opportunist."2 Had the chapter been written while Roosevelt still lived, and had 203 pages.
