A savage and bitterly-sarcastic satirical spoof epitaph, the text of which, the Liverpool Mercury reported in 1822, had been 'repeatedly published before'. Some versions are said to have included a woodcut by George Cruikshank, but the only other publication found (with a few minor variations from the present version) is in the Irish Magazine, June 1809, pp.286-287, where the author is named as 'WILKS INR.', i.e. '[John] Wilkes [sic] Junior'. Printed on one side of a 26.5 x 10 cm piece of unwatermarked wove paper. In fair condition, aged and worn, with several fold lines, and one closed tear repaired with archival tape. Titled: 'An | Inscription | for the Proposed | Monument to the Rt. Hon. W. Pitt. | Respectfully dedicated to the Subscribers to his Statue. | De Mortuis nil nisi Verum.' Sixty-seven lines of centred text, beginning: 'This Mausoleum entombs | WILLIAM PITT, | Who died January 23, 1806, aged only 47 years. | With unprecedented influence | For 23 years he was PRIME MINISTER of | The British Empire. | He possessed great Talents and transcendant | Eloquence, | But his Worth may be best estimated | "By Experience and the Evidence of Facts."' Pitt's 'achievements' are listed: 'He was the Advocate for Reform, which did not succeed. | The Opposer of the Slave Trade, which increased. | The Patron of the Irish Catholics, who were not emancipated. | To England a professed Protector, and the avowed Enemy to France. | During his Government | The Bulwarks of British Freedom were subverted, | The Ancient Nobility degraded, | The Poor additionally depressed, | The Middling Classes of Society nearly annihilated, | Popular Associations prohibited, and | The Sources of Corruption deepened and enlarged.' The epitaph continues in the same vein, including the observation that 'Two Hundred Thousand Britons' were sacrificed in '"Just and necessary Wars"'. There is a list of overthrown Britain's allies, with the comment 'Let Nations glory in such Friendship!', and France's prosperity during the period is described, with the comment 'Let Nations deprecate such Enmity!' The only groups said to have benefited during Pitt's ministry are 'The Committee of Lloyd's Coffee House, | The Collectors of Taxes, | The Purchasers of Loans, and Contractors for the | Army, | The Modern Nobility, | Lord Melville, | and | Napoleon, Emperor of France, | Enriched, ennobled, protected, and aggrandized by | "This Friend of the People!" | "This Saviour of Britain!!" | "This Protector of Europe!!!" | "This Heaven-born Minister!!!!" | "This Pilot that weather'd the Storm!!!!!"' No other copy of a work of this title, let alone this Sunderland printing, found on either WorldCat or COPAC. BBTI has Summers & Young active in Sunderland between 1800 and 1812. Copac lists three items by the firm between 1803 and 1810.…

Contemporary full leather with rubbing/scuffing and stains; board edges worn particularly at corners; head and heel spine leather worn even with text block edges; spine embellished with five slightly raised bands but no title label present; slender splitting and leather loss at joints but boards remain firm. Pencil ownership inscription dated 1940 on front free endpaper; ownership signature "W M Robertson" in antiquarian ink at top of front flyleaf verso and repeated on pages [27] and 1 with perhaps some other occurrences to be discovered upon a more carful perusal. One quire at center fractionally pulled but binding is otherwise firm. Printer advertisement for "W. and J. Innys" [William Innys; John Innys] on unpaged final text leaf. Clowes is an eminent firm of English printers, founded in London in 1803, and still thriving in Suffolk. The twelve typed letters are each one page, quarto, on the firm's Duke Street letterhead. The autograph letter is one page, 12mo, with mourning border. The collection in good condition overall, with a few items aged and lightly creased. Most items docketed and bearing the Society's stamp. All items except the circular signed by 'W A Clowes', who (he informs Wood in his first letter) has taken over from his cousin, Captain W. C. Knight Clowes (whose copy of the First Folio was subsequently bought by William Foyle). The collection provides an fascinating insight into the effect of the Great War on the printing trade, with Clowes reluctantly announcing repeated increases in costs. In the third letter (21 October 1915) he states: 'We wish to wait and see what the effect of Lord Derby's recruiting scheme will be on the printing trade, because if many more men are taken from it the cost of production will again be greatly increased [.] I am glad to say that for the moment we have a stock of the old Journal paper at the usual price'. Letter four (14 August 1918) warns of 'another large rise in wages in the London District in the near future', and letter five (27 March 1918) confirms 'the large increase in wages that the printing and binding trades have been compelled to grant their workpeople. All materials used in printing and binding have again risen and are still rising, [.] we shall be obliged to raise our prices to you for printing and binding by a considerable percentage'. Letter six (20 March 1918) responds to a complaint from Menzies regarding the printing of the Journal's wrappers: 'I [.] cannot in any way defend the printing. | I was having the matter thoroughly looked into before your letter came, and the type renovated'. He complains that 'labour is so scarce', but promises that he will be 'keeping an eye on it until it is done properly'. Letter of 13 June 1917 announces '15% extra on composition, machining and binding, owing to the increases in wages which took place previously to October 1916, and the large increase that took place then, and the still larger increase which had to be paid on this June 1st'. A printed circular announces another rise of 15%, from 31 October 1917, 'owing to the further increases in War Bonuses and the never ceasing increases in the cost of all materials'. On 28 March 1917 Clowes warns that the firm has 'only sufficient paper in stock to take us to about June 30th' and that 'prices will rise very sharply immediately owing to the great scarcity of materials'. In the handwritten letter, which ends the series, Clowes thanks Menzies for his 'kind letter of sympathy with us on the sad loss we have sustained by the death of my Cousin Mr Knight Clowes. I note with pleasure that you intend to insert a short obituary notice of him in your Journal. You may have seen the one in "The Times" for Wednesday last'. …

From the papers of Sylvia and Robert Lynd. A scarce item: five copies on JISC. In NLI, but not in the British Library. Bigger, a notable antiquary and republican (see Dictionary of Irish Biography), is the friend to whom Sir Roger Casement entrusted the 'black box' of incriminating documents, which Bigger destroyed after Casement's execution. 12pp, 16mo. Contemporary report printed on pp.11-12, with note: 'At the time Dr. Drennan was penning his Protest a very important meeting was held in Dublin on the National holiday, of which the following is an account. Haghe features prominently in William Day's entry in the Oxford DNB, in which their firm's publication of Robert's 'Holy Land' (1842-49) is described as 'the most ambitious lithographic work ever published', for which 'Haghe, praised by Roberts for the faithful and artistic interpretation of his drawings, must bear most of the credit for the success of this publication'. See also the entry on the recipient Charles Manby (1804-1884), Secretary of the Institution of Civil Engineers. 2pp, 12mo. On the first leaf of a 12mo bifolium. In good condition, lightly aged, with strip of mount adhering to edge of blank second leaf. Addressed to 'Charles Mamby [sic] Esquire' and signed 'L Haghe'. An unusual, scarce and frail survival. Printed on one side of a piece of tissue paper, roughly 35 cm square. Surprisingly well preserved: heavily creased, with some wear to extremities, one small hole (not affecting text or image) and one closed tear of approximately 4 cm to coloured border. The central section features portraits of the Spanish and English kings, within a decorative crested border, above twelve lines of text beginning 'The Royal yacht conveying King Alfonso XIII of Spain from Cherbourg will arrive on Monday at the South Jetty where the Prince of Wales will receive the young monarch on behalf of King Edward.' The illustration and text are enclosed in a floral border printed in yellow, green and gold. It was on this visit that the Spanish king met his future bride, Princess Victoria Eugenie of Battenberg. This is a document which would certainly repay investigation. No record of this firm of merchants has been discovered, or even of where they traded. Robison is a Scottish name, and there is an undated reference to a 'James Robison, merchant in Dumfries'; most Shuttleworth's hail from the north-east of England, and there is mention of a John Shuttleworth in Manchester in 1820. Other clues in the document suggest a London location: in 1793 Napper and Co. were listed as 'Dyers and Callico Printers, Old-street-square'; 'Clayton & Scott' were solicitors of Lincoln's Inn; and in 1810 a John Serrell dissolved his partnership with Charles Lickfold, 'as Carpenters and Builders, and Corn and Coal Dealers, at Camberwell in the County of Surrey'. On one side of a good piece of laid paper, 102 x 68 cm (i.e. three and a third feet by two). Folded six times into a 26 x 17 cm packet, on the front of which is written 'James Robinson Esqre.' In fair condition, with a number of closed tears along the folds (easily repairable, and with no loss of text whatever), and the reverse (the outside of the packet into which it is folded) rather grubby. The accountant William McRea has signed and dated the statement at bottom right. We at least know what the firm traded in: at bottom left are the details of the 'Merchandise': 'Coffee / Spice &c / Hops / Tea / Sugar'. The firm was clearly a substantial concern: the balance to 30 December 1804 was £17, 176 10s 4d. The rest of the document consists of the cash book, with the customary double-entry arrangement of credits and debits, and a list of the accounts of the drawers: William Bennett, James Bradley, Clayton & Scott, Henry Clarke, [Three pr. Cents,] John Hall, [Merchandise,] James Robinson, John Serrell, Thomas Reed, [Sundry Accounts,] John Shuttleworth Private Account, Napper & Co., Elizabeth Reed, [Lease & Fixtures,] Robison & Reed Goods Account, John Shuttleworth Goods Account, Joseph Reed Private Account'.…
