Large octavo, two volumes: pp. [1-7] 8-110; [1-7] 8-104, text printed in double columns, illustrations, the two parts bound together in original publisher's blue green cloth printed in black. First editions. Two famous collections of "true" ghost stories and articles on psychic phenomena by a major nineteenth-century promoter and champion of Spiritualism. Topics in the first number are: "The Ghost that Dwells in Each of Us," "Clairvoyance -- The Vision of the Out of Slight," "Premonitions and Second Sight," "Ghosts of the Living on Business," "Ghosts Keeping Promise," "Apparitions at or Before Death," "Ghosts Announcing Their Own Death," "Ghosts of the Dead with a Practical Object," "Out-of-Door Ghosts," and "Evil Spirits and Phantasms which Touch," with appendix "Some Historical Ghosts." The second number comprises two parts: "Experiments and Experiences" and "Haunted Houses," with appendix "Record of Appearances of the Double." "The Christmas and New Year's numbers of the REVIEW OF REVIEWS, 1891-2, supplied a large number of REAL GHOST STORIES, under which title, indeed, they were reprinted in October, 1897. Many of us will remember how people at the time spoke of the REVIEW with bated breath: how it was hurried out of the sight of children, and read almost in secret by their elders with blanching cheeks and tingling nerves. I fear we may have become very sophisticated since these happy days." - Summers (ed), Victorian Ghost Stories, p. xxi. The best known and most influential of the late Victorian "true" ghost story collections. For a biographical sketch of Stead see, Shepard (ed.), Encyclopedia of Occultism & Parapsychology, Second Edition, pp. 1286-7. Cloth soiled, stained on rear cover, and quite worn at edges, the first number has several gatherings printed on cheap pulp paper which is darkened, the first free endpaper and first two leaves (frontispiece and title leaf) are detached, otherwise internally sound and clean. (#101359).

Prima edizione
The July-December 1891 issue of of Stead's The Review of Reviews. Octavo, original publisher's binding, illustrated, advertisements, index. In very good condition. The Review of Reviews was a noted family of monthly journals founded in 1890â"1893 by British reform journalist William Thomas Stead. Established across three continents in London (1891), New York (1892) and Melbourne (1893), the Review of Reviews, American Review of Reviews and Australasian Review of Reviews represented Stead's dream of a global publishing empire. Along with the dozens of magazine and book reviews it contained, The Review included a running commentary of world events, entitled "The Progress of the World", and a character sketch of a current "celebrity". The first issue was an instant success, and opened with numerous facsimiled welcome messages which Stead had courted from various dignitaries of the time. However, Stead's relationship with Newnes came under strain when the latter strongly objected to Stead's scathing character sketch of The Times newspaper (eventually published in March).
