    Presumed first edition (no direct statement provided). [18], [two foldouts], 1-492 pages. Staple-bound paperback: H 22.75cm x L 15.25cm. Tan paper covers toned and some tears and surface abrasion; cover corners worn as are spine ends with heel chipped. Past owner's ink and pencil writing on front cover verso and opposing front free endpaper; scattered ink and pencil marks amongst text; some soiling and light toning to interior leaves; creased/curled corners mostly affecting initial and rear leaves. Binding is firm. Evidently prepared as a course textbook at the University of Alabama. Author Dr. Clanton Ware Williams earned a bachelors from Davidson College in 1927, a masters from Alabama in 1938, and a Ph.D. in history from Vanderbilt in 1938. Dr. Williams taught at Alabama from 1929 to 1954 thereafter joining the University of Houston where he was served as president from December 1956 to 1961. After several overseas positions Williams served as the first executive director of the Alabama Commission on Higher Education from 1970-1974.
