In plaats van de moderne oorlogsvoering waar Rist vaak over schreef, biedt dit werk een sfeervolle blik op de zeventiende-eeuwse Deense geschiedenis, waarin de verdediging van de stad en de persoonlijke levens van de personages onlosmakelijk met elkaar verweven zijn.
