The author notes that many geologists have long maintained that the coal beds in the Raton Mesa region are of a similar age to those in the Denver Basin, but this book provides evidence to the contrary. The author shows that the coal measures are composed of two distinct formations separated by a period of erosion, with the lower formation containing a Montana flora that is distinct from the Laramie flora of the Denver Basin, evidence that the Vermejo formation is older than the Laramie and more closely related to the Mesaverde of western New Mexico. The upper formation, which the author names Raton, contains an Eocene flora that is similar to that of post-Laramie formations of the Denver Basin and to that of the Eocene Wilcox group of the Gulf Coast. The book concludes that the unconformity between the Vermejo and Raton formations represents a time interval comparable to that separating the Laramie from the Arapahoe of the Denver Basin. This book is a reproduction of an important historical work, digitally reconstructed using state-of-the-art technology to preserve the original format.
