New York: Leavitt and Company, 1850. 223 p, 16 plates (complete). Original pictorial cloth binding measures 9.25 x 6.5", 8vo. In fair condition. Boards normally scuffed at edges and worn/bumped at corners. H…ead and tail of spine lacking (headbands intact). Hinges exhibit chipped cloth with exposed binding. Gilt deco on spine lightly dulled, but overall binding remains bright and attractive. All edges of text-block gilt. Water or tea dampness staining at head of gutter from front end-page to approximately page 50. Toning and age-staining through text-block. Tissue guard exhibit off-setting as well as leaves adjacent to plates. Binding intact. Please see photos. Nathaniel Parker Willis (1806 1867), also known as N. P. Willis, was an American writer, poet and editor who worked with several notable American writers including Edgar Allan Poe and Henry Wadsworth Longfellow. He became the highest-paid magazine writer of his day. His brother was the composer Richard Storrs Willis and his sister Sara wrote under the name Fanny Fern. Harriet Jacobs wrote her autobiography while being employed as his children's nurse. Contains a rare appearance of Keats's The Eve of St. Agnes, with remarks by Leigh Hunt. Other selections are by Dickens, Cooper, and W.C. Bryant, but several contributions by Lydia Sigourney and N.P. Willis may be original. COLI1850CDFX - 08/25 - HK2644.
