'This book is designed to provide a convenient source of information about the lives and works of a large number (786) of early American writers. Each writer is discussed in an individual entry that includes primary and secondary bibliographical references, a brief biography, and a critical appraisal of the writer's works and significance. The entries are arranged alphabetically and are followed by appendixes (classifying the writers by date of birth, place of birth, and principal place of residence and presenting a chronology of important events from 1492 to 1800) and by a general index. A noteworthy feature of this reference tool is its wide scope and broad principles of inclusion, enabling us to include entries on a variety of minor writers. Although we have also provided entries on the major writers of the period, which should prove useful and informative in their own right, we have recognized that treatments of authors such as William Bradford, Benjamin Franklin, Cotton Mather, and Edward Taylor are available in a variety of readily accessible reference formats. However, convenient accessibility of information does not prevail when one turns to the study of the many early American writers who are not well-known or highly valued in strictly literary terms but who are nevertheless worthy of our attention. As microform reproductions of practically all texts published in colonial and early national America are now available, the need for widely inclusive reference tools is all the more apparent. In an effort to meet this need, we have included entries on a large number of lesser-known writers, many of whom are discussed and evaluated here in some detail for the first time.'
