Hardcover. Condizione: New. Condizione sovraccoperta: New. 1st Edition. This delightful collection of long-lost autobiographical sketches, by-lined by the most glittering celebrities of Hollywood's golden age, is a genuine nostalgic treasure. More than mere movie puffery, it's a reflection of the innocence, simplicity, and idealism that once characterized our national sentiment. Along with the growth of the Hollywood film industry in the first half of this century came a public fascination with the habits, mores, and passions of America's favorite screen heroes and heroines. One result was the personal touch in accounts of the stars' lives and goals, in stories and photographs such as these. Private lives were not exposed; it's the pretense of intimacy that is good naturedly on display in stories that bear the public authorship of such favorites as Ingrid Bergman, Humphrey Bogart, Betty Grable, Johnny Weissmuller (the redoubtable Tarzan), and Loretta Young. Edith Head discusses movie fashions, and Perc Wesunore the growth of his cosmetic clan. Liz Smith's new foreword helps us see these stars' words in perspective as she looks back on "a head-trip known as Hollywood in the Forties." She reminds us what Hollywood was really like then, and how much the fantasy world of the movies meant to us all.The golden "old days" come back as we read these stories and look at the full-page photos, many with the "full color" touch of the era. Hollywood in the 1940s is ideal for film buffs and for anyone interested in American popular culture. IVY CRANE WILSON was Hollywood correspondent for the London Star, now defunct, and other British publications. LIZ SMITH was born and raised in Texas. After graduating from the University of Texas she set out for New York City, where she has been raising cain ever since as a celebrity watcher. She was movie reviewer for Cosmopolitan, and her nationally syndicated column now appears daily in Ae New York Daily News and countless other U.S. newspapers. All orders shipped protected in a box.
