Aggiungi al carrelloHard Back. Condizione: Fine. Condizione sovraccoperta: Very Good. First Edition. 23 Pages. Dark green cloth with gold spine lettering. Dust jacket is plain white with no lettering. This edition is limited to 250 numbered copies of which this is number 8. There is a five-line inscription by the author on the presentation page that is dated August 11, 1975. Interior text pages are flawless. The first of the Four Portraits (Biographies or Memoirs) in this book is about John E. Snyder. It is different from the other three as it was written especially for inclusion here. The Portrait about George Ross Eshleman is reprinted from the 1945 Lancaster Law Review, and the Portrait about John E. Malone is reprinted from the 1948 Lancaster Law Review. The fourth Portrait about William Huestis Keller is reprinted from the 1949 Lancaster Law Review. In the foreword to Obiter Scripta -- a book that the author published in 1971, he said that he would never write another book. These Portraits are so slight that Windolph says they can hardly be regarded as a book. The frontispiece of this book is a reproduction of a painting by Charles Demuth called After Sir Christopher Wren. Mr. Demuth was born and brought up in a building located on the south side of East King Street in Lancaster, Pennsylvania. John E. Snyder maintained his office at that same location. The author began his practice of law in this same building. A competent critic once said that Demuth was perhaps the finest watercolorist who ever lived. The author was told that Demuth's painting After Sir Christopher Wren was inspired by the Lancaster County Court House. That painting is reproduced here and is from The Dial Collection, Worcester Art Museum.…

Hardback. Condizione: New. These finely tempered reflections of a small city lawyer restate, in a graceful and informal manner, the true meaning of law and government to ordinary men. F. Lyman Windolph, for twenty-five years a prominent attorney in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, has handled almost every kind of legal case in his career, and through his close association with his clients he has gained an understanding of their lives and problems which, coupled with his wide legal knowledge, and alert sense of the social questions of the present, gives his essays a disarming and reassuring tone. Lawyers especially will enjoy his discussion of his experience with various cases and the more general topics of the value of the jury system, the difference between city and country trials, the ethics of defending guilty clients. But all will find the chapters on the meaning of democracy and liberalism and the indirect picture which the book gives of the day-by-day life in a small American community richly rewarding. In the last instance, two final essays-one on the Pennsylvania Dutch religious sects and "A Letter to My Father"-are particularly delightful. Several of the chapters have previously been published in the Atlantic Monthly and other magazines.…
