An account of the Empire Air Training Scheme (EATS), launched in 1940, which was designed to increase the number of able airmen in the Royal Air Force during World War Two. Winter chronicles the careers of 251 Australians who trained in Southern Rhodesia, who went on to fight with the RAF in every theatre of war, from the South West Pacific to Russia. While Winter details their specific experiences, he concludes that they were indicative of the experiences of the many men who trained under the scheme in other countries.
