Éditions de Minuit, Paris, 1971. 314p. Paperback. Front cover near head spine slightly creased. Spine with light reading traces. Signature and date on free endpaper. Pages a little bit yellowed. ?Epicurus? ?Letter to Herodotus?, which is quoted in Diogenes Laertius? ?Lives of the Philosophers?, is the sole surviving discussion b…y Epicurus of the major tents of his physics, cosmology, and psychology. It is also the earliest complete work by a Greek atomist. Thus, the twenty-two-page work is one of the most important documents for the history of Greek philosophy and science and well deserving of a separate edition and extended commentary. The main reason, however, that the three editors have collaborated to bring out this new edition is not so much the historical importance of the work as the conviction that earlier editors have doen a gross injustice to Epicurus. In the Introduction the editors give a complete history of the editions of this text and maintain that the fifteenth-century Latin translation by Traversari (?) became the basis for subsequent interpretations and even for corrections of the Greek text. (?) In contrast, the editors of this edition print the text virtually as it is found in the manuscripts, retaining only two of the emendations. In addition, they provide a thorough commentary with a defence and interpretation of their text and readings. They hope thereby to let the modern reader see the original words and meaning of Epicurus for the first time. Though there will be much debate about wether this new edition really does reflect Epicurus? words more accurately than its predecessors, I think one can safely say that the editors have provided a sound and reasonable defence for their text. (?) Most of all, serious readers of Epicurus will appreciate the commentary. With a constant eye on the ?ipsissima verba? of the Greek text, and making extensive, judicious use of all the resourced of Greek philology, the editors provide a detailed, plausible analysis of all difficult passages and of Epicurus? argument as a whole. It is with such careful explication of the text that all interpretation must begin; and as in the case of the readings of the text, the interpretations of this particular edition may be disputed, but never dismissed. Finally there is also a glossary of key concepts, a list of the idiosyncrasies of Epicurus? grammar, and an especially welcome, complete index of Greek words. Thus this new edition of Epicurus? ?Letter to Herodotus? will have to be given a place alongside the standard works on Epicureanism.? (DAVID E. HAHM in Isis, 1974, pp.268-269).
