William Withering FRS was an English botanist, geologist, chemist, physician and first systematic investigator of the bioactivity of digitalis. He trained as a physician and studied medicine at the University of Edinburgh Medical School. Withering is best known for his treatise An Account of the Foxglove, and Some of Its Medical Uses (1785), which provided a detailed description of the use of foxglove (Digitalis purpurea) to treat dropsy (edema), a condition characterized by the accumulation of fluid in soft tissues. / Louis Harry Roddis was born in Cherokee County, Iowa. He was educated in Osakis, Minnesota and later received both a Bachelor of Science and Medical Doctorate from the University of Minnesota. Upon completion of his medical degree, Roddis entered the United States Navy, in which he served for nearly 37 years and attained the rank of Captain. During his Naval career, Roddis distinguished himself as both a doctor and a naval historian. â" Waring Historical Library, South Carolina.…

Aggiungi al carrelloHardcover. 3rd Edition. 8vo (8.75 x 5.5 inches) 4 volumes. Half title page. Contemporary half green morocco and marbled boards; spine in 7 compartments, letterpiece morocco in second, tooling, gilt. (Hinge needs light repair, extremities worn. Text pages clean, occasional spotting to plates). 31 engraved plates. Provenance: biographical inscription on endpaper of William Withering author unknown. Ancient Greek inscription epitaph [?] Third Edition. First published in two volumes, London 1776, Withering's botany "was little more than a translation of the portions of Linnaeus's writings relevant to English botany. As Withering acquired more botanical experience, however, his Botanical Arrangement became increasingly based on his first-hand observations. In the last edition published during his lifetime (1796), Withering effected a number of important taxonomic changes in the Linnaean system. He also surveyed the British cryptogams, a class of plants imperfectly described by Linnaeus" (DSB) Withering describes places of growth, time of flowering, economic uses as drugs, poisonous properties, methods of botanical investigation and preservation of specimens. His book remained a standard in British flora studies and was published through four more editions by his son between 1805 and 1830. William Withering was born in Shropshire and studied medicine in Edinburgh. He went on to work as a physician at Birmingham, where his administration of the foxglove plant to a patient with dropsy, brought him fame. Withering went on to also publish "An Account of the Foxglove and some of its Medical Use", which reported on the clinical trials and results on the effects and toxicity of digitalis, the active ingredient of the foxglove plant.
