August 1672 in Den Haag) war als Ratspensionär von Holland für nahezu 20 Jahre der dominierende Staatsmann der Republik der Vereinigten Niederlande und damit einer der ersten Nicht-Monarchen an der Spitze einer europäischen Großmacht. In der "Ersten Statthalterlosen Periode" galt de Witt gemeinsam mit seinem Onkel Cornelis de Graeff als der führende republikanische Protagonist. Diese progressive Kooperation zwischen den beiden Staatsmännern, und die daraus resultierende Unterstützung Amsterdams war eine wichtige politische Achse, die das politische System innerhalb der Republik ordnete. Im Rampjaar 1672 wurde er gemeinsam mit seinem Bruder Cornelis de Witt durch eine von oranischen Parteigängern aufgehetzte Volksmenge gelyncht.- Beiliegend die Seiten 73-80 der gedruckten Original-Beschreibung: ". Den 22. Junii schrieb der Herr Pensionarius de Witt an die Herren Staaden im Haag, wie gestern Abends . eine unbekante Person seinem Diener die brennende Fackel auß der Hand gewunden . und so bald vier Kerlen mit blossem gewehr . auf ihn loß gesprungen . als sie ihr Vorhaben vollbracht zu haben vermeynet, in der Finster davon geschlichen . Den 19. diß, ward auch dessen Bruder, Herr Cornelius de Witt . gefänglich nach dem Haag gebracht . Wenige Tage hernach, begabe sich im Haag die abscheuliche und dergleichen nie erhörte Mordthat . so der Sinnlose Pöbel daselbst, mit beyden Herren, Johanne und Cornelio de Witten, gespielet .
