Corliss Lamont, a leading humanist philosopher in the 1930s-1950s was best known as a civil libertarian, active during the McCarthy period defending working class and middle… class (mostly Jewish) people, who were being victimised. In the process Lamont was cited for contempt of Congress, but in 1956 an appeals court overturned his indictment. Lamont served as a director of the American Civil Liberties Union from 1932-1954, and chairman until his death in 1995, of the National Emergency Civil Liberties Committee.
